Le cœur du logiciel est un éditeur « tel écran-tel écrit » (wysiwyg) pour des textes structurés avec formules mathématiques.

TeXmacs permet de produire des documents de grande qualité typographique grâce à une interface simple d’utilisation.
Le logiciel intègre également un outil de présentation, un éditeur d’images, un système de contrôle de version, un outil bibliographique, des interfaces pour plusieurs systèmes de calcul mathématique et bien davantage… GNU TeXmacs n’est pas basé sur TeX/LaTeX, mais propose des convertisseurs de qualité pour LaTeX ainsi que pour Html/MathML/MathJax.
