The aim of this special issue is to bring together the best research on innovative teaching and learning practices in mathematics in engineering education and to develop deeper understandings of the characteristics of current teaching and learning practices that can inform the design and implementation of future innovative practices. As a whole, the special issue will provide a state-of-the-art overview of this emerging field at the cross-roads between mathematics and engineering education. “For engineering” refers to mathematics as a service subject for engineering programs. “In engineering” refers to mathematics as an integrated part of engineering sciences.
Topics of theory-based empirical research studies appropriate for the special issue include:
- studies of current practices that can inform future innovations;
- studies of teaching and learning innovations (e.g., courses bridging mathematics with engineering content; modelling-based interventions, use of technologies); and,
- studies on the use of mathematics in engineers’ workplaces (e.g., Innovation/Maker Spaces).
Extended abstracts for a research paper in the Special Issue are to be 750-1000 words (including references) and submitted to the three guest Editors by August 31, 2019, via email. The editorial team will select the most suitable abstracts to be developed into full papers. When invited to submit a paper, authors will have until February 1, 2020 to submit a full paper. All papers will go through a double blind review process and reviewed according to the standards of IJRUME, particularly in terms of scientific quality and originality. Invitations for submission of full papers will be sent to corresponding authors by October 15, 2019. Maximum length of full papers is to be 10,000 words (including references). The expected publication date is spring 2021.
